The Opportunity
Berkhamsted Golf Club is a busy, inclusive club that is golf focused. Founded in 1890, the course sits within 520 acres of heathland on Berkhamsted Common with the Golf Club Trustees overseeing the non-golfing activities of the estate. The Club prides itself on its sustainability credentials, both on the course and the additional 350 acres of common land. Little has changed in the course's design since James Braid’s extension of the original Willie Park and Harry Colt designs which adds a distinct charm to the course. The Club's reputation is founded in this unique fact and its link with nature having no man-made hazards.
Candidate Profile: Course Manager – Berkhamsted Golf Club
Overview:
Berkhamsted Golf Club, a highly regarded heathland golf course known for its traditional and natural approach to course design, seeks a visionary and experienced Course Manager. The ideal candidate will bring strong leadership, advanced technical skills, and a passion for sustainable course management to maintain and enhance the club’s reputation for quality and innovation with a keen eye for the finer detail.
Key Responsibilities:
Course Presentation & Maintenance:

A drive for presentation of playing surfaces, ensuring the course is maintained to the highest standard, reflecting its unique character and natural beauty

Uphold and enhance the club’s sustainable approach to course management, with an emphasis on natural heathland ecology
Team Leadership:
-
Lead, motivate, and develop a dedicated team of greenkeepers, fostering a positive and collaborative work environment

Provide ongoing training and development to ensure the team’s technical and professional growth
Strategic Planning & Project Management:
-
Develop and implement long-term agronomic plans to enhance course quality and playability
-
Oversee projects such as mound renovations, drainage improvements, machinery replacement and reservoir development
Equipment & Resource Management:
-
Manage and maintain greenkeeping machinery and tools, ensuring they are serviced and operational
-
Oversee the annual budget, ensuring efficient use of resources while meeting financial targets
Health, Safety, and Compliance:

Ensure compliance with all health, safety, and environmental regulations
-
Maintain clear and accurate records for pesticide use, machinery maintenance, and staff training
Essential Skills & Qualifications:
-
Minimum of NVQ Level 3 in Sports Turf Management (or equivalent experience)

Extensive experience in greenkeeping, with at least 3 years in a senior greenkeeping position

Proven expertise in managing heathland or similar naturalistic courses

Strong leadership and communication skills to inspire and manage a diverse team

Knowledge of sustainable and environmentally friendly turf management practices
-
Proficient in the use of modern turf care equipment and technologies
-
Financial acumen, including budget management and cost control
Desirable Attributes:
- Qualification in ecology, environmental science, or sustainable land management
- Experience working on top-100 ranked courses or similar high-profile venues
- Familiarity with irrigation system installation and maintenance
- A proactive and innovative mindset with a passion for continuous improvement
