West Kent Golf Club is a popular, member-focused golf club set in beautiful surroundings in Kent. Known for our welcoming atmosphere and scenic 18-hole, downland course, we pride ourselves on offering an enjoyable and accessible golfing experience to our members. The course provides a challenge to golfers of all abilities, and we are committed to maintaining it to the highest standards. As a club dedicated to serving our members, we are looking for an experienced Course Manager to ensure the continued quality and playability of our course.
Role Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Course Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of the golf course, ensuring it is maintained to the highest possible standards. This role plays a key part in ensuring an exceptional experience for members and visitors alike, through the effective management of staff, equipment, and resources.
As Course Manager, you will be responsible for planning and executing course maintenance, managing a team of greenkeepers, and liaising with the General Manager and greens committee to ensure the course meets the needs of the club and its members.
Key Responsibilities:

Course Maintenance & Agronomy: Oversee the maintenance of all areas of the golf course, including greens, tees, fairways, bunkers, roughs, and woodland. Implement technical practices to maintain optimal playing surfaces through sound agronomic principles, including soil testing, aeration, drainage, and fertilization

Turf Management: Plan and execute all aspects of turf management, including the preparation and execution of seasonal treatments, irrigation management, mowing schedules, and pest and disease control using integrated pest management (IPM) principles

Team Leadership & Development: Lead, manage, and motivate a team of 1 deputy course manager and 4 assistant greenkeepers, providing training and development to ensure high standards of work. Delegate tasks and oversee their completion, ensuring efficient use of staff time and resources

Equipment Management: Oversee the maintenance and repair of greenkeeping machinery and equipment. Ensure all machinery is serviced regularly and in good working order, optimising the efficiency of operations

Course Improvement Projects: Work closely with the General Manager and greens committee to identify areas for improvement on the course. Plan, manage, and implement turf-related development projects, including redesigns, bunker renovations, and soil improvements

Health & Safety Compliance: Ensure that all health and safety regulations are adhered to, including proper chemical use, machinery operation, and safe working practices. Ensure all staff are appropriately trained in safety procedures

Budgeting & Resource Management: Manage the greenkeeping department's budget, ordering materials, chemicals, and equipment, ensuring that expenditure is within budget while maintaining course quality. Source the best-value products without compromising standards

Course Presentation & Playability: Ensure the course is presented to a high standard at all times, adapting to seasonal changes and adverse weather conditions. Manage course closures or restrictions as needed due to weather events or maintenance activities
Key Requirements:

Proven Experience: At least 3–5 years of experience in a senior greenkeeping role or as a Course Manager, with a strong track record of managing and maintaining high-quality golf courses

Technical Greenkeeping Expertise: In-depth knowledge of agronomy, soil science and the practical application of turf management techniques, including aeration, overseeding, irrigation systems, and pest/disease management

Leadership & Team Management: Strong experience leading and managing a team, including providing training and support to greenkeeping staff, and ensuring high productivity and job satisfaction

Qualifications: A relevant qualification in Turf Management, HND, or equivalent is essential. A PA1/PA6 pesticide application certificate would be an advantage

Problem-Solving & Initiative: Ability to identify issues and come up with practical solutions, with a proactive and hands-on approach to problem-solving

Attention to Detail: Exceptional attention to detail with the ability to maintain the course to the highest standards, managing all aspects of greenkeeping with precision and care

Communication & Collaboration: Strong communication skills to liaise effectively with the General Manager, greens committees, and greenkeeping team, as well as the ability to work in partnership with other departments within the club

Flexibility: Willingness to work early mornings, weekends, and during periods of adverse weather, adapting work schedules as needed to meet the demands of course maintenance

Health & Safety Awareness: A solid understanding of current health and safety legislation, including safe chemical handling and machine operation
