This class will help greenkeepers acquire the skills to apply sound maths to all sorts of greenkeeping problems. The entire day is interactive and everything is based around real life scenarios. Subjects covered include: calculating fertilisers and NPK inputs; bulk ordering; bulk density; specific gravity; percentage increases and decreases; VAT; Stimpmeter calculations including the Breed equation; asset depreciation; and ratios.
Learning outcomes:
- Ability to calculate turf, soil or aggregates for a project
- Calculate how much fertiliser is needed
- Know how much NPK has been applied
- How to use and decipher percentages
- Be able to use the Breed equation (Stimpmeter on a slope)
- Working knowledge of depreciation

Course Manager
Les Howkins is Course Manager at The Richmond Golf Club in Surrey. He has over 30 years experience in the greenkeeping industry and is a past Chairman of BIGGA. He achieved his Master Greenkeeper Certificate in 2004. Les is a regular presenter on the Continue to Learn programme and creator of the workshop ‘Mathematics for Modern Greenkeeping’.
