Step by step: Writing a strategic plan for your golf course

Howard is a people-orientated club manager who cares deeply about his team and delivering an exceptional Club at Berkhamsted for its members that enriches their lives and that they can be proud of. 

Howard completed his degree in Environmental Biology from Swansea University and began his working career with a Wildlife Trust, completing practical conservation work on nature reserves. Howard transitioned to greenkeeping in 2006 and quickly identified the benefits that golf course can provide to wildlife, if managed sympathetically. Indeed, Howard is a passionate believer that good practices can not only benefit the experience of the golfer, but also enhance the natural environment and boost biodiversity.

Howard began his greenkeeping career at Mentmore Golf and Country Club, before moving to Redbourn Golf Club and working for the next 8 years in a variety of roles for BGL Golf. Howard successfully transitioned from course management into club management via the Manager in Training programme within BGL. 

Howard ran multiple golf centres for BGL, before taking on his first private club in 2018 at Berkhamsted Golf Club.

During his time at Berkhamsted, Howard has improved the standards and experience for members in many areas including food and beverage and the golf course, by utilising his knowledge of agronomy as well as tackling and solving problems in an innovative and collaborative way.
